Through film and television, pirates are often portrayed as swashbuckling scoundrels, however the real history of pirates is far more complex. The Pirates exhibition follows their history from the South China Sea to the coast of North Africa. Focusing on real life figures including Edward ‘Blackbeard’ Teach, Anne Bonny, William Kidd and more, this exhibition showcases how the perception of pirates is changing.
From buried treasure to walking the plank, learn about what is truly fact and what is fiction. Admire a series of illustrations by Livia Giorgina Carpineto who brings the notorious pirate queen Zheng Yi Sao to life and see a The Pirate Hunter’s Cup on display while learning about the excellent Bartholomew Roberts.
Perfect for those with an interest in the history of pirates, this exhibition is a must-see at the National Maritime Museum!

The exhibition includes dramatic effects and themes of violence and is therefore recommended for visitors aged 7 and over.
Younger children are still welcome in the exhibition space, but we advise parents and carers to be mindful of the subjects raised.
