Bath Highlights

The Roman Baths Museum is one of England's most popular attractions.

The Royal Crescent, the grandest of Bath's crescents, begun by the younger John Wood in 1767.

During Bath's heyday, the younger John Wood's Assembly Rooms (on Bennett Street) were the centre of the city's social scene. Although a fire virtually destroyed the building in 1942, it has since been restored. Now housing the Museum of Costume, there is an interesting collection of clothing from the Stuart era through to the latest Japanese designs.

Bath Facts

The city became a spa with the Latin name Aquae Sulis ("the waters of Sul") c. 60 AD when the Romans built baths and a temple in the valley of the River Avon, although hot springs were known even before then.

The city has software, publishing and service-oriented industries. Theatres, museums and other cultural and sporting venues have helped make it a major centre for tourism, with more than one million staying visitors and 3.8 million day visitors to the city each year.
